Oremus pro Antistite nostro Alexandro. Stet et pascat in fortitudine tua, Domine, in sublimitate nominis tui.
(Let us pray for our Bishop Alexander. May he stand firm and shepherd his flock by Your strength, O Lord, in the majesty of Your name.)
In Hardy's 'Jude the Obscure' Jude overhears two Oxford clerics arguing heatedly about eastward vs. westward position. His comment is, 'Good God - the eastward position and all creation groaning!' To be as concerned about ritual gestures as this bishop and his mother are seems somewhat out of proportion. Why cannot they accept that many of their co-religionists now prefer to receive communion in the hand and do so with perfect reverence? God's prophets have been telling us for at least 3,000 years that God does not look on the outward observance. It's high time we got the message.
