This afternoon I drove about 380 miles from Marquette to La Crosse in the State of Wisconsin to attend a Canon Law Conference which takes place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe tomorrow and Wednesday.
Among the speakers is Archbishop Raymond Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and former Bishop of La Crosse. Archbishop Burke was then and is now a stout defender of the dignity of human life and won my admiration particularly when he issued a notification that any politician who voted for or publicly supported legislation permitting abortion should be denied Holy Communion in accordance with Canon 915. He particularly had in mind Senator John Kerry, a Catholic Democratic Presidential Candidate, who - notwithstading the fact that he is Catholic - was in favour of abortion legislation and was in Bishop Burke's diocese.
Archbishop Burke is scheduled to give two lectures entitled 'Current Questions Regarding the Administration of Temporal Goods of the Church' and 'Ongoing Challenges in the Administration of Justice.' He is also to preside at the Masses on both days.
Archbishop Burke founded the shrine and I am told it is very impressive. I shall see it for the first time tomorrow and will hopefully post some photos.
I am also looking forward to the opening lecture by Father James Conn SJ on 'Current Questions Regarding the Teaching Office of the Church.
Full details about the conference can be found here.
:-D Archbishop Burke is one of the all-around CAtholic good guys. The kind who should be wearing the mitre! i.e. possesses the moral courage to go along with the office. True, even St. Peter had his "moments" but anyone who puts "the right and just" first, has "The Right STuff."

Dear Fr. John: Give my best to Archbishop Burke -from a simple English priest in Vermont - try and ignore the priest-haters who post unkind remarks - as St. John Vianney said "leave people without a priest and they will become beasts."
