Well, I suppose a 'bonnet' and a 'hood' are both forms of headgear but I can't make the connection between a 'boot' and a 'trunk'! :-)
Perhaps the 'boot' was orginally where one kept one's boots whilst out driving. It's interesting how the language has mutated in crossing the Atlantic!
I had a trade in like that once. That car would start in reverse, so I had to trade it in!
