Mass in a Connemara Cabin

Mass in a Connemara Cabin, 1883, Aloysius O'Kelly
On loan to the National Gallery of Ireland from the people of St Patrick's,
Edinburgh and the Trustees of the Archdiocese of St Andrew's, Edinburgh.
I received a postcard of this beautifully evocative painting recently. It reminds me of the stories my Irish parents used to tell me about their grandparents and Catholic life in rural and poor Ireland. I would love to get hold of a copy of this painting. Anyone know where I can get one? I have put a message on this website but have had no further comment.

  1. Father, if you google Mass in a Connemara Cabin and scroll down to the fifth entry you will find that the National Gallery of Ireland does a photo reproduction for £25 (ouch). It's the only result I could find.

  2. It looks like there's a book called Rural Life which is carried by Boston College for this event -- I expect it may have this illustration in it. Check here.

I expect you can give them a call to confirm if the picture in question is contained therein.

You may also find more about the exhibit itself in this link. Which is the unbroken link the article you linked to tried to link to but failed. :-D If you can follow that tortured syntax, good luck!

Try talking to one of the staff at the museum bookshop. Often there are repro prints of some of the more popular paintings at an exhibit like this. [At least Havard's Sackler Museum used to do that, I'm assuming BC does similar.]

I also found a reference to another book, which may contain the picture: "The show was inspired by art historian Claudia Kinmonth’s book “Irish Rural Interiors in Art,’’ published in 2006, which unearthed dozens of previously unknown paintings of Irish Catholic country people." This review may be of interest.

And apparently, the painting had been 'lost' for over 100 years - it has an interesting history.

It looks like you can order a print of this painting here for 25 euros.
